AMD RYZEN 5

Postby KR3EP » Sun May 21, 2017 2:54 am

It seems that very soon the software is going to go beyond the limits of my old I5. Its an old second gen.
I have been looking at AMD RYZEN 5 1600 6 Cores, 12 threads, 16m L3 and 3m L2 cache. Benchmarks are equal to and in most greater than the Intel 7700. About 200 dollars cheaper.
My question is performance improvement and what is a reasonable expectation?

Jeff,

If you look at my other thread here:

https://apache-labs.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2412

You will see that I went from a situation where I could not get smooth audio, to one where I could. But my situation is more demanding than most, as I rely on "virtual" audio exclusively and also run digital audio workstation software at the same time.

If you are only using mic and speakers attached to the radio and not running a lot of other software on your PC simultaneously you might not need that much power.

However, as you point out, having a rippin' fast PC doesn't cost all that much these days. I find my PC to be a joy to use in a more general fashion. It's nice to sit down in front of it and have it run so quickly and smoothly.

I'll have to try the passmark program once I get windows reinstalled. I have a Ryzen 7 machine I just assembled.

Excellent. Do be sure to post the details of your build if you find it is running things adequately.

I tried to make it a monster machine, Ryzen 7 1700, 32GB mem, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and a few SSDrives. The UEFI Bios won't touch Windows 7 and Linux wanted Ubuntu 17.01. I must conform...
