Confused on Hermes Terminology

Postby npope » Wed Apr 19, 2017 10:57 pm

Sorry if this is a naive question, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

I have an Anan 10e, which I understand is a Hermes-based radio. However, I see firmware loads on the TAPR github listed for Hermes and the 10e/100b separately. I understand the 10e/100b is a 14-bit Hermes vs the 10/100 which is 16-bit Hermes.

So, finally the question: Does Hermes-labeled firmware apply to *all* the Hermes radios, or just the 16-bit? IOW, Is the "Hermes" firmware ok to install on the 14-bit radios, or do I need to stick to "14 bit Hermes" firmware?

Hi Nick,

The answer is no you can't use Hermes firmware in the Hermes10E (ANAN-10E). These are two very different platforms, not simply due to the fact that they use different Tx DACs. They also do not use the same Altera Cyclone III FPGAs. The 10E FPGA has fewer logic elements in it (25,000 vs 40,000 in the standard Hermes) and is too small to hold the standard Hermes firmware.

One big hurdle to getting a grasp on the HPSDR project is understanding the terminology. Can someone help me with a couple of (very) basic questions:

Can I assume the original TAPR Hermes was the 14 bit version? If not how does one distinguish a 14 from a 16 bit Hermes?

Can I assume that the original TAPR Hermes board used in conjunction with the Apache Labs ANAN-10 PA Kit (see https://www.gigaparts.com/pa-and-housing-kit-for-anan-10-anan-10-pa-kit-2.html) is simply a 14 bit Hermes board with a PA, and not, for the purposes of this board, an ANAN-10 or any other version of Anan radio?

Thanks for helping a newbie?

Greg

The original TAPR Hermes is the 16-bit version with the larger FPGA. To identify it you have to look at the board and note the part numbers on the IC's in question.

An original TAPR Hermes with an ANAN-10 PA Kit is essentially an ANAN-10 (not an ANAN-10E).
