Procedure for full backup of Thetis, or if it refuses to start

Postby w-u-2-o » Tue Jul 11, 2023 7:34 pm

To make a complete backup of your Thetis environment (64 bit), make copies of the following two folders:

C:\Program Files\OpenHPSDR\Thetis

C:\Users\<your windows username goes here>\AppData\Roaming\OpenHPSDR\Thetis-x64

Then no matter what you do after that, if your replace those folders from your backup copies all will be as it was, with the possible exception of start menu shortcuts.

If you are in a situation where you are trying to upgrade and you can't get the new version to run, or something is just going crazy and Thetis won't start even with a reset database, then make a copy (just in case) of:

C:\Users\<your windows username goes here>\AppData\Roaming\OpenHPSDR\Thetis-x64

Then delete that original folder completely and try again.

Scott, if I remember correctly, you have to have Administrator privileges in order to see the app data subfolder. I think you may have mentioned that in an older post when this same issue came up.

If you own the PC that shouldn't be a problem, James.

This is the procedure I have followed before installing updates.
If I wasn't running as Administrator, then the above was necessary to see the appdata subfolder in order to make a backup before installing a new version.

There's no difference in those procedures, James, so I'm not sure what you are getting at.

In the link I posted you mention the fact that the folders that need to be copied for backup are " hidden " folders. And then you detail how to access them. In the procedure you describe in this thread, you Leave that bit of information out. I wasn't trying to be critical or anything like that. But, when I first started making a backup before installing a new version, I found the other thread and found it useful.
That really helped me at the time. So,when I saw that detail was missing in this thread I thought maybe you just overlooked it. Again, not being critical. Just wanted to save others from wondering what they were doing wrong when they couldn't find the appdata subfolder.

Scott,

Not sure if what I have been doing is wrong, but I have copied the OpenHPSDR folders in their entirety rather than only the Thetis subfolders next level down from OpenHPSDR folders as shown below. Could this way of backing things up end up causing issues that normally don't show up?

C:\Program Files\OpenHPSDR

C:\Users\<my Windows username>\AppData\Roaming\OpenHPSDR

Not that I'm aware of.
