Noise Blanker Settings

Postby KA5KKT » Mon May 23, 2022 3:50 pm

Does someone care to offer suggested settings for the noise blanker(s)? Predominantly SSB operation.

If you search the forum you'll find there's been some discussion on this in the past, but nothing definitive ever came of it:

There are a lot of different types of noise, and the software has three NB modes and two NR modes, plus the ANF and MNF features. One of more of those is likely to be helpful depending on the specific noise characteristics. Remember that NB modes are for impulsive noise, whereas NR modes are for non-impulsive noise.

As for changing things in the settings menus, I've never found I was able to make any improvement in performance over the stock settings for the NB or NR modes. However, in my rural location I get very, very few opportunities to use NB, while at the same time I literally never turn off NR2.

The bottom line is probably just try things until you either get the results you want (or not).

One thing I forgot: in Seutp > DSP > NB/SNB, make sure that NB2 MODE is Linear Interpolate. That is far superior to the other methods, and makes all the difference between NB and NB2 modes.

Thanks, Scott. I also found (elsewhere?) your tip about RX1/RX2 AF levels at 100 useful. What values do you use for Threshold, Times and SNB Threshold on the Setup > DSP > NB/SNB Tab?

Software as a service can lead to awkward configuration, complicated user interface and an abundance of features.

During the extraordinarily rare times I use NB2 (never NB), I use the default settings for those values.
