Thetis on Windows 11 Preview

Postby KA5KKT » Sat Aug 14, 2021 2:39 pm

Has someone run Thetis on Windows 11 Preview? If so, was that done with or without the TPM Ver.2 workaround or with the TPM Ver. 2 chip onboard?

Do you have any experiences to comment on?

I'm running on Win11 now but do have the TPM 2.0 on my computer.
Microsoft has apparently said TPM 2.0 will be required although not required in the preview yet....

Thanks for the reply on Windows 11.

As soon as the news of the TPM Ver. 2 requiement were out, all the chips were bought up. My board (MSI) has the socket for the chip, but no chip as of yet.

I have seen that there is a workaround for no TPM chip, but don't have the details at hand at the moment.

I take it Thetis is running as usual under Windows 11.

All new motherboards from 2016 onwards should be compatible with Windows 11 TPM requirements...

That's good to know.

There are firmware versions of TPM. While not as secure as the hardware version, many modern boards may support it. Mine does. I selected it and it seems to pass the known tests for Win 11.

Thetis running well with and without TPM chip.
I find operation faster and smoother.

Unfortunately that is not at all true. For example, my EFGA Z270FTW-K motherboard, a fairly high end motherboard when introduced in 2017, does not have any TPM chip on it, nor a socket for one. So I am S.O.L for Win11 unless Microsoft changes their plans.

HI Win 11 working ok here with Thetis and A8k I have an old HP laptop 2016 and it
has a TPM 2.0 Chip You can use powershell in Admin mode to check if your PC has TPM
board using the command Get-TPM

Full details here https://techexpert.tips/powershell/powe ... -tpm-chip/

You can also bypass TPM and load Win 11 allthough I have not tried this

Scott, I found (using Google Translate) a BIOS update (BIOS EVGA Z270 FTW K 1.07) for your motherboard that appears to have added support for TPM:

Thanks for the research, Mark, but I'm a little leery of running something with not much in the way of security provenance. If it doesn't come straight from EVGA and all that sort of thing. Plus there is no evidence that Win11 will work with a software TPM instance.

I'm just going to be patient and wait for Win11 full release and see where the chips fall (ha, a pun!) It might be a good excuse for an new PC build out, too :D

Rodger that, Scott, I'm of a similar wait-and-see mindset at least with regard to upcoming CPUs from Intel and AMD, I'll probably stand up a new PC a year or so from now myself after I see how the latest CPU offerings compare.

Scott,

I saw your post in another thread that you're running a 7700K. That CPU has hardware-based Intel Identity Protection Technology, which offers the same discrete capabilities as TPM 2.0. From what I'm reading Windows treats both of those technologies identically.

Also, I ran across a "ReadySunValley" utility on Microsoft Store that informed me my computer (6700K) was in fact Windows 11 capable, despite Microsoft's own compatibility checker telling me Win11 wouldn't run. So I decided to just take the plunge and installed Win11 Beta and it's been running flawlessly ever since, including all auto-updates!

Good luck,

Scott,

Windows 11 is now officially available judging by a Windows update notification I got today!

Using Thetis 2.8.11 (10/20/20), P1 at present as I am getting more familiar with this software.

Has anyone "upgraded" to Windows 11? Personally, I don't see the need for it and even intermediate updates for Windows 10 that I am using tend to cause problems. Especially on sound controls/defaults.

Suggestions would be appreciated!

Whoops, I missed your post Mark!

I don't know how long you have been using Anan, but I have only had my 7000 DLE MKII for about 2 months.

I upgraded yesterday.

The "throttling index tweak" was reverted to its defaults so you have to apply it again
No issues at all running Thetis&Anan.

For those who want to try download the W11 installation assistant at:

The upgrade to Win11 went very smooth.. Thetis seems happy except for a small glitch I do notice with the RX/TX S-Meter on receiving the meter looks and moves fast and normal. But on Transmit the movement is sluggish and lagging. Can anyone else confirm this?

After 3 days using W11 without any problem I MUST go back to Windows 10.

This morning when I started my PC I got an alert about Windows firewall not working, and I'am unable to start it again, later Windows store stopped working and so many apps didn't work.

Thetis connects to my radio, but no signals or audio at all, SDR Console works for a few seconds and then hangs...

Looks like this morning a windows defender update (nothing else was updated) completely ruined my Windows 11 OS.

What a shame!

DON'T UPGRADE TO W11 RIGHT NOW!

I dumped Windows Defender some time back and started using BitDefender Free. It's very low overhead and reliable like a belt buckle.

I've been running Windows 11 Beta ever since it came out.

FWIW, I got my official notice in Windows Update that not only don't I have TPM 2.0, but my processor, an i7-7700K, is, quite surprisingly, not a supported processor.

At this time I see no reason to force the issue (which is easy, BTW). I've read that unsupported processors are much more likely to suffer frequency kernal crashes. Win 10 Pro continues to run quite nicely for me.

Hi All,

I have been playing with W11 on the workshop test PC for a few months now.

Just wanted to report that today I upgraded my main shack PC to W11 (first release version) and so far it’s goooood. Now I am not suggesting you jump in and do the same right now unless you live and breath I.T. like me. This is just a heads-up to let you know it works for us hams.

The following apps are confirmed and working correctly : Thetis (PowerSDR on Anan-8000), PSTrotator+relays+rotor control, Logger32, VAC, VSPE, JTDX, WSJT-X, Router for uHam station master, Google maps.

If you do want to play W11 your motherboard will need to support either ROM-based or hardware-based TPM (trusted platform module). Most boards produced in the last 5 or so years should be good for it. If not check to see if you can get a new BIOS from the manufacturers support page.

I did install W11 on my I7 without TPM. The I7 is also not supported by W11. All works perfect, no glitches.

I have been running the latest version of Thetis in Windows 11 since its inception. I am amazed at how stable it has been. The only thing aggravating is having to go through and correct almost all sound settings after each update. I'm tempted to start with a clean slate and
install the latest version of Windows 10. I'm just out of the hospital from having Covid. I will wait until I feel better and do just that.
Thanks for all the updates and improvements! I had to do some catching up after being away two months.

I'm running an ASIO driver into Voicemeeter Potato with Cantabile Lite running in Patch Insert mode as a VST host, and have been running Windows 11 since it was still in Beta. I've observed no sound-related problems at all (or any other problems, for that matter) after any Windows update.

From a reliability standpoint I must admit I'm extremely pleased with Thetis and Voicemeeter running in Windows 11.
