Ideal AGC Settings?

Postby AB5N » Tue Jun 30, 2020 1:36 pm

Greetings all-

I have not seen AGC settings talked about on the forum. We have a Custom AGC setting and I was wondering if anyone has
found their ideal custom setting? I am trying to make a better Slow setting for SSB. I still cannot seem to
simulate the typical Slow SSB setting found on other radios.

Any ideas?

Thanks- Bob-AB5N

So nobody has any insights on this? What I have determined is that there is no release time constant adjuster.
It is always at about 1 second. That- is what we need to have real control of AGC performance.

In the PowerSDR and Thetis AGC implementation you've got attack, hang and decay times, with the latter two being adjustable. How do those differ from "release" time?

I also am working to optimize the agc settings for working weaker dx typically on the low bands (160 and 80). What I would find very useful is a description of each of the adjustments when using the custom setting. And how do they affect the signal being received.

While I have experimented with each adjustment its really shooting in the dark without an understanding of what each control is designed to do.

Thanks

You can find a very detailed AGC tutorial here:

Attack -- how fast the AGC adjusts the level
Hang -- how long the AGC level will last
Decay -- how long the AGC takes to back off.

Example...in dB attenuation

0-4 attack
4 hang
4-0 decay
