QSK TX AF Monitor?

Postby n4lq » Sun Apr 12, 2020 1:18 pm

TX AF Monitor adjustment stopped working. I do hear it but cannot adjust level.

When in QSK with MON off I can hear the receiver's sidetone via direct connected speakers but cannot vary the level via the TX AF Mon control. Even with it set at zero I still hear the receive sidetone.

Actually I would prefer to just turn the sidetone off in QSK so I can monitor my sidetone via my ext. keyer to eliminate latency.
I am not using VAC... Just direct speakers.

Semi with MON sidetone works ok but it is a pain to change sidetone level. I have to enter transmit mode and drag the Master AF. Easier way???

Thetis v2.7.0 a3 ANAN 7000DLEMKII Black

It did work when first installed but after switching between Semi and QSK a few times, I could no longer vary the level.

Not a CW op, but I believe when in QSK you are not hearing sidetone, you are hearing your own transmission in full duplex mode.

Paging @W2PA for the correct answer...

Yes I understand I'm hearing my own signal when in QSK. Also am aware of how the AGC settings change etc.
I just can't use the TX AF level to change the gain. It does nothing.

Right, because TX AF level controls the output of the MON stream, not RX1.

I'm not sure what you mean by Mon stream... Mon is turned off and I still hear the sidetone via the receiver, as I should however there's just no control via TX AF Mon... It would be fine if I could just totally silence it but no luck

Correct, Scott. When sidetone is off all you hear is your own signal.

Thetis 2.6.9 and Orion2 FW 1.9
When BKIN=OFF and using MOX for CW, the sidetone can be turned ON/OFF and no latency WRT the keyer paddle.
When BKIN=SEMI, and the sidetone is OFF, I hear the TX signal in the monitor but delayed a few ms, totally throws off my sending.
When BKIN=SEMI, and the sidetone is ON, I hear BOTH the TX signal delayed, and the sidetone, even worse.
When BKIN=QSK, same thing as BKIN=SEMI...

Is there going to be a FIX for this?
delayed monitor / sidetone is a non-starter for CW ops...
The QSK works fine, but you need to send with a keyboard no a paddle...

Terry,

How are you getting audio out of the unit? Are you using a speaker attached to the speaker or headphone output on the RF unit? Or are you using VAC?

What ANAN model are you using?

Scott,
Using Apache Labs Anan 7000DLE MKii CPU i7...
Getting audio from Speaker 1/4 inch phono jack left rear.
Will it be different from headphone / powered speaker left front?

The headphone and speaker outputs are identical except for levels.

I'm not a CW guy. I dabbled with the new QSK features when they were released and it seemed to work ok for me.

The original release notes for this feature are at the following link, perhaps they might help:

Why is there not a separate slider control for MON or SIDETONE level, independent of the AF Master Gain?
This would be both in Thetis and PowerSDR...
most traditional transceivers have a separate control for the monitor level.

Actually, the MON level is controlled by the Master AF slider when the unit is in a TX state. You can confirm this by opening the Setup > Transmit tab, going into a transmit state, moving the Master AF slider, and watching the value of the Monitor TX AF setting.

This may not be your preferred embodiment for the main console user interface (UI) but the code is fully open source and you or anyone else that you can convince to work on it is able to change it. In fact, we just had a gentleman from the UK write an absolute tone of UI code for Thetis like that.

Remember, Apache only builds hardware, regardless of what the web site might imply. All of the software was written by volunteers as open source code for the love of the hobby and the art. And not even a lot of volunteers, actually damn few. Hell, probably less than 15 people over the life of the openHPSDR effort, and the preponderance of the code was written by probably less than 5. Compare that to massive open source efforts that have hundreds or even thousands of contributors. I'm actually impressed as hell as to how completely awesome the the software and firmware is!

True dat!

I bought my 7KDLE Mk2 based largely on 1) other users' satisfaction with this software, and 2) the compatibility of the software with this hardware.

To say I'm pleased with the package would be a severe understatement!
