PiHPSDR controller V2 - Dual Encoder knobs and case?

Postby Anthony_G7LRQ » Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:37 am

I have built and have working the PiHPSDR controller V2, but I am struggling to find compatible knobs for the Dual Encoder EC11EBB24C03. I also can only find a knob at 30mm diameter for the VFO, I like something a little larger and finally what have other used for the case that doesn't need me to re-mortgage my house.

Can anyone offer links to a supplier for the knobs and case options please.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Knobs can be tough, especially concentric knob sets.

You might sniff around some of the high end, home brew, flight simulator sites. They deal with this problem all the time. Here's an example that's close and might be made to work:

Also, look at the Selco catalog: https://www.selcoproducts.com/knobs

It looks like it would be no problem using their collet knob line. You will probably have to drill or ream the top center knob out from 3mm to 3.5mm to match the Alps 3.5mm center shaft size, but that's no big deal.

Kjell and I have used standard collet knobs on both the Odin console and Andromeda prototypes, both of which use the identical encoder. You do need to drill out the collet insert to 3.5mm.

There is a commercial product available, if you are prepared to buy a minimum order of around 250 knobs. They do look nice..... or you can go down the route Kjell used for some prototypes, and have some knobs 3D printed. Kjell may be able to provide the design files.

If you buy a commercial Japanese radio with dual shaft encoders and pull off the knobs, the chances are you'll find the same encoder underneath. It seems that volume commercial products have membrane keypads and proprietary moulded knobs, all design to the supplier's house style.

Thanks all for the information.

Laurence I wonder if you are able to supply the exact details of the ones you have used, ( drilling out is not an issues)

I've been able to find an RS order with these items:

Sifam Collet Knob, Body: Black, for use with knob Dia. 11.5mm, 3.175mm Shaft
Stock no.:225-669
Qty:10

Sifam Collet Knob, Body: Black, for use with knob Dia. 15.5mm, 6mm Shaft
Stock no.:225-710
Qty:10

Sifam Potentiometer Knob Cap, Body: Black, for use with knob Dia. 11mm
Stock no.:225-811
Qty:10

Really they are a little "tall" from the front panel, but do work!
