Windows10 2004 Update busted my radio

I thought it was just me until I saw this thread
viewtopic.php?f=8&p=12108#p12108
My PC Is a i7-4790K with 16GB Ram and a 240SSD
After my PC installed the Windows 10 2004 Update it was impossible to use my Anan 100D without audio stream jitters.
looking at the DC spike at 0KHz on receive I could see it regularly pulsing corresponding to the jitters.
Not likely to be a Client problem as it has manifested on SDR Console and mRX PS V3.4.
Had to roll back to 1909 and turn off Feature updates off to fix it.

Scott please move if in the wrong section
Cheers
Bill

Just anecdotal, but I’ve had to increase buffer sizes since that update and have the issue with sdrconsole both with the Anan and also with an SDRPlay. No definitive cause as Windows is a black box to me.

I have it working but at increased latency.

I've had no issues with windows updates until very recently when it caused the audio, using VAC for FT8 digital mode, to be distorted. Scott had suggested I uninstall and reinstall my VAC program (the one by Eugene M) ... I did go back to the previous version of Windows and it worked again but I don't want a computer that is not up to date re upgrades for security reasons so I bit the bullet - allowed the install to happen again - the issue was back - uninstalled and reinstalled VAC and everything worked fine!

your mileage may vary.

Likewise no issues with 2004. But I will comment on Muzychenko's VAC, make sure you keep it up to date, hi latest version is 4.64 which was released in July. If you paid for his software you are entitled to updates.

Yes, Windows updates can sometimes play hell with sound drivers.

I'm stuck at 1909. Every time I try the 2004 upgrade it fails at the second boot phase with no good error message and reverts back to 1909. Still haven't figured it out.

Scott, are you trying to upgrade via the built in upgrade? if so you may want to try the stand alone 2004 updater.

Gary, that link takes me to the Windows download page. I'd rather not rebuild my system from scratch.

Scott,

A "repair/upgrade" would load 2004 and you can select to keep your files; at least according to Windows. I haven't actually done it. I like clean installs even though it is a multi-day project. Here is a link to the procedure:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 0096ec3085

I actually think you are blessed to not being able to upgrade to 2004! I give Kudos to those that have been able to make it work as I can not. I just upgraded my entire system, other than the case, and had to run a new Win 10 install. Unfortunately, Microsoft no longer lets you download an install file for any version prior to 2004. It's 2004 or Linux, apparently. I loaded 2004 even though I had a bad experience with it in an upgrade back in July. I thought surely they must have corrected the problems by now. Wrong. It still is miserable. I tried everything I could to get the latency anywhere close to reasonable and failed. Thetis would sit there for a bit, counters sitting still, and then all of a sudden it would jump 70 or more and then sit for a minute or two and then jump again. This continued until I shut it down. Nothing I tried would make it stop; force, buffers in auto, etc. including trying all the old Windows clean up work; setting high performance power profile, turning off all the fancy Windows graphics effects, ditching the intel motherboard NIC for a Realtek etc.

Thinking I was doomed, I nevertheless started looking to see if I could find 1909 somewhere. I discovered that "Rufus", the application I use to load images to a USB stick, had a function that lets you download several previous versions to then load on USB sticks. I downloaded 1909, it installed just fine, and magically I am able to achieve low latency again. Thought I was a goner for awhile. The new 9th Gen I7 is purring nicely.

Scott, no you do not rebuild from scratch, it does am update just as if you did it from within Windows Updater. On this page there is a link for "Windows 10 May 2020 Update" which downloads Windows10Upgrade9252.exe that, when executed, does an update with no ill issues (at least on the 8 PC's I have done so far).

Scott,

I was stuck on 1803 and couldnt jump to 1903. I joined the microsft community and had to upload a file/folder for them to access on Gdrive. It turned out to be my backup software that messed up my wimmount.sys image path and it wouldnt update.

Best of luck finding it, if anyone can you can :)

Gary,

I downloaded and ran the updater. It is no different than doing it from Windows Update. I very assiduously removed all USB devices, updated all drivers, disabled all anti-virus, and even disabled VSPE and Voicemeeter. No joy, still failed. I rolled back to my nightly backup from 0200 this morning because I don't trust the Windows Update automatic roll-back.

It looks like I may be stuck until either Microsoft sorts things out or I do a bare metal rebuild.

73!

Scott

Scott, you must be that 1:1,000,000,000 users that ever sees a issue with Windows!

Had to happen to me sooner or later! Usually I don't have such problems.

Thanks, Helmut. Unfortunately I don't have an EFI boot partition like you did so that's not going to work for me.
