ANAN 100D PTT VHF PROBLEM

Postby mark1161 » Tue May 29, 2018 1:56 am

Good Evening,

This problem has just begun. When I am in VHF, with my XVTR, I am seeing a dimming of the led lights in my power supply when I key up the rig indicating some kind of short. There is no such indication when I am on HF bands. At first, I thought it might be the Ukrainian transverter causing the problem. However, after disconnecting all BNC cables and removing the PTT cable, from the rig, and keying up the radio, on a VHF frequency, the problem persists. I purchased the radio March 31, 2017 and I am the original owner. When I am in the HF bands, there is no problem with PTT in digital or voice modes and I am putting out a solid 100 watts. I have used the radio with transverters, both Ukrainian and DownEast Microwave, since I bought it back in March 2017 with no issues until now. Is there something I am missing in settings that might be causing this?

When in "VHF" mode, what frequency is the 100D set to transmit on?

Just to be clear...I have several VHF repeaters programmed into the Memory. 144.790 is an example of one of them. I have had the same group of repeaters programmed for the last year.

Thanks

If you are referring to the antenna settings, it is transmitting on 10 meters.

Good questions, of course, and I just checked it. There is a problem getting to 100 watts on that band and there is a slight dimming of the LED lights on the power supply. Although, it is not as bad as when I am on a VHF frequency.

OK, so the current is a bit high for your power supply on 10M, running by itself, at 100W. No surprise there. The ANAN series radios require more current for 10 and even more for 6M. If you do not have a legit 30A power supply then you are going to be sucking wind. Also, if you are using the stock ANAN power cable, check the fuse holder. Sometimes they develop a small resistance and that causes quite a bit of heating when the radio is demanding 25A. Make sure there is no heat damage to your fuse holder.

That said, I can't believe that the radio is to blame. Are you using the transverter TX output? If so, do you have Disable HF PA checked in Setup > General > Ant/Filters > Ant?

Thanks for the great information! I did not know that the radio demands more power on those bands. This would explain why I was not getting full output on 6 meters as well. Although, I am not on that band very often. No, I did not check Disable HF Pa in the Ant/Filters section. Will I have to uncheck that when I switch back to HF? This might also explain a part of the problem. The Power Supply is an Astron RS-35M Linear model. I should have enough headroom on that to accomodate the rig. But it ain't necessarily so if I am getting these results. I will substitute my SS-50 tonight to see if that solves the issue. One more question...does it affect radio performance, long term, if I should use a switching power supply vs. a linear power supply?

Thanks again.

Yes.

You were correct...Power supply used was inadequate or going bad or both. Used my AlincoDM-330MV and Astron SS-50 to test and easily reached 100 watts on 10 meters. Can't seem to get to 100 watts on 6 meters. I have lowered the PA settings to the minimum 38.8. Now, I have to figure out why the diminished power supply affected the transverter, when keying up, since it was operating on its own PS. Something to do with the PTT cable from the rig into the transverter putting an untenable load into the XVTR? The Ukrainian XVTR is cooked.

Thank-you again.

Hi, can somebody , please, say me the 'normal' current draw by a Anan 100D in 6m band for 100W output ?

I am alarmed by what I see in the power supply current meter. A 320W power supply cut by excesive current.
In HF bands 20A is normal in all bands, now in the sporadic season I start operating in 6 and detect this 'problem'.

Thanks and regards.

Jesus.
