Abhi,

Could we get more details about what is new about the 8000 MKII? The ad copy on the website doesn't really explain it. Don't all 8000DLE MKI's have the TX attenuator already? Is the 50V final RF amplifier stage the same as in the 8000 MKI? Or is it a new 50V design that does not have the high impedance/high voltage behavior?

Thanks & 73,

Scott

- I do not see a dedicated transverter RX input, is it missing or does the 8000 MKII have a combined RX/TX transverter port?
- RX/TX switching with (noisy?) relays or quiet PIN diodes?

hw?

Hi Scott/Volker/Tony and all,

These are the changes incorporated into the MKII compared to the previous model:

1. Incorporates the Orion MKII rev5.2 with the Tx attenuator (please note that all 8000DLEs shipped in the last few months also incorporate the same revision of the Orion MKII)

2. Use of 48v input as opposed to the 13.8v DC IN, these are now several very good 48v DC supplies available and also much cheaper than a 13.8v 50A equivalent models, There is a cost saving by removing the internal 13.8v to 48v boost supply.

3. changes to the PA board and LPF to improve performance and duty cycle, the PA design and Output device is the same.

4. We now no longer need the Arduino Display and the complexities arising out of it.

5. The enclosure footprint has been reduced.

The 8000DLE amd the MKII uses exactly the same transverter output scheme, both have a relay switched combined Tx/Rx output. The Transverter port in the 8000DLE is marked as "Transverter Tx Out" , however, it is actuallt a combined Tx/Rx port.

Abhi

OK, so the same old 8000 if you don't quibble about the revision of the Orion MKII, but without the annoying front panel, the complexity of the internal 50V upconverter, and smaller dimensions. All welcome changes, plus the lower price.

However, there must be a 50 to 12VDC power supply inside now, correct?

Does the factory have any recommendations on 50V, 600W power supplies? The only thing I can find new that is not stratospheric-ally priced are a couple of "Mean Well" brand supplies on Amazon, both under $100. Are those any good?

Otherwise you have to search around for server "blade" supplies that start at around $250 and go up from there, unless you going to buy the same thing, used, on eBay. And you've got to play games terminating 120V into the blind mate connectors on those.

Hi Scott,

As I mentioned there are significant changes to the LPF, SWR/Directional coupler design. The 200W PA has been tweaked as well.

There is an internal low noise DC-DC converter for the 12v rail.

I would recommend using Meanwell HEP-600-48, its completely silent and rugged. If fan noise does not bother you there are several other options such as the Meanwell RSP-750-48

What happened to the 8000DLE MKII ad? Don´t see it anymore.

Powersupply "noise" in this discussion refers to blower noise if I understand it right. I wouldn´t mind a little bit of blower or fan noise as long as the powersupply is "quiet" or let´s say "reasonably quiet" in terms of RF emissions. Any experience with the Meanwell powersupplies in that respect? The HEP-series seems to be quite new and comes for approx. 230 € but if one needs to design and add additional filtering plus shielding.......................................

Hi,

Is there any update on delivery times. I also believe that the PA is 500w from what I’ve heard.

Is anybody aware of this ?

That would maybe explain the higher voltage supply required.

Thanks

Glenn

Strange.

Why announce something then remove the link

You would have thought they would have updated us
with the status.

Oh well.

I didn´t read anything about 500 W when the ad was online but 200 W like the "old" ANAN-8000DLE. It is just easier to supply the 50 V to the radio and then use a stepdown converter to supply the lower voltages like 12 VDC, 5VDC etc. as the current in these low voltage circuits is approx. 1,5 to 2 A. Also the wire size can be much smaller making it more flexible with less voltage drop either. Supplying a solid 40 to 45 A at the 14 VDC level is not an easy task and every joint can be a problem - including the fuseholder!

I don´t know why Abhi didn´t reply to the many requests yet as he was replying quite fast to some of the questions asked here.

Interesting that also the "old" ANAN-8000DLE disappeared and is not available anymore - at least I couldn´t find a supplier having it in stock.

Looks like the previously listed 48V power supplies won't work with the new 500W 8000DLE-MKII
The PSP-600-48 does 12.5A but could put two in series and not have the fan noise plus have a "back up" capability at limited power out.
The RSP-750-48 does 15.7A
And the 8000DLE-MKII says it wants 20A
So at https://www.trcelectronics.com I found these possibilities -- something tells me the fans won't be all that quiet....
https://www.trcelectronics.com/ecomm/pdf/se1000.pdf SE-1000-48 -- doesn't say but does have fan maybe PWM controlled -- $194 -- I'm ordering one of these along with the new 8000MKII-DLE and will report on it.

https://www.trcelectronics.com/traco-po ... s-txln_960 -- 20A 1000W -- $367 -- constant fan speed
https://www.trcelectronics.com/mean-wel ... y-hep-1000 HEP-1000-48 -- 21A 1008W -- $477 -- constant fan speed

Thanks for posting that update!

Nothing really new here. We are all used to the Orion MKxxx performance by now, and BLF188 based amp's are now quite commonplace. But it will be nice to have it all in one box at that price. You'd be hard pressed to duplicate a separate 500W LDMOS amp as nicely packaged as that for less than $1K USD.

Is this truly 16.929 inches wide? I.e. will it fit between the rails on a standard 19" equipment rack? The original 8000 could not, it was too wide. If it's less than 17.72" it should fit, so that's a good thing.

The photos also show some sort of microcontroller based front panel that runs the amp protective circuits. The original announcement above said there would not be one of these. The previous implementation was nothing but a PITA and I have hacked code that disables the VSWR protection. I could not run remotely without it. Some additional detail on how the new display and controller works would be most welcome, particularly where remote operations are concerned.

Most important: will the new amp topology fix the cascode/current source behavior in the old 200W design that caused the 8000DLE to be a huge PITA to use with an auto-tuner?

Finally, there are lots and lots of 1KW, 48VDC power supplies. Example: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/MEAN-WELL/RSP-1000-48?qs=Xb8IjHhkxj5mmeT6EC3r2w%3D%3D Not sure what the best choice will be, but there are plenty of them.

What do you mean? Obviously that three year old post is hopelessly out of date. Unless they squirreled away a whole bunch of the old cards you know these will be getting MKIIIs if not IVs by the time they ship. Apache can't afford to make lifetime buys on all of the components when production lots are so small and far apart.

Can we maybe start a new topic that covers the 8000DLE that was introduced today?

It was introduced back in 2019, so this is that topic. It's been a long time coming.

Scott, I downloaded the photos of the new 8000DLE MKII. I don't see any indication it has the internal NUC. Other than the new style LCD display and no Standby button, it's the same on the front and back of the case as my 8000DLE. One difference on the rear I did see was the Power Pole connector is reversed from what my radio has.

The power pole isn't "backwards" -- it's just flipped upside down.

The BLF188 LDMOS output device is certainly interesting. Looks to be designed to fill a niche for those who would like a 500 watt station without having to bother with an external amp. Nice clean looking case and display.

I didn't say it was backwards. I said it was reversed from the connectors on my 8000DLE.
It is the same orientation as the power pole connectors on my Flex 6600M . ( and a few other devices that I have that use Power Poles.

Dear Scott,

Go for Huawei 53V 60A power supply that is being used in Mercury IIIS Amplifier and its communication grade Rectifier module available in China as brand new for $75-100. It has a small footprint and excellent noise properties.
