Not a fan of that case style, but wonder what they did to get to these 2 listed improvements:

2. PA board improvements for higher duty cycle, 100% ICAS duty cycle supported.
3. Tx Signal generation redesigned to improve SNR at low power levels.

I don't like the larger size either, but I suppose anything that assists with heat management is good. I've been playing a "shell game" on my desktop, trying to figure out placement that works while not disrupting present operating ergonomics.

Concerning points 2 & 3, see Ahbi's reply from the Apache mail list:

"So far as the improvements in the hardware are concerned:

"1. Bigger heatsink
2. Changed components of the PA LPF and SWR bridge for higher duty cycle, ie the radio is more rugged now.
3. The Tx chain now controls power using a digital step attenuator and the DAC is now always driven 100%, this results in higher SNR at low power levels."

Take a look at the Apache Labs website this morning.
The old style 7000DLE is no longer in the product lineup.
It was still there as late as Saturday, when I last looked.

Wonder if there is a mod path to update older boards, or is it not significant enough? I only run my 7000 @ 30W to drive my amp anyways.

Hopefully there will be PIN diode switching available in the next future..... 8-)

The PIN diode T/R switching circuit is easily implemented. However, to do it right means upconverting +12V DC to over 100V so the receive PIN diodes can be reverse-biased during transmit. Otherwise, a high SWR at the RF output port (e.g., accidental open or short) will cause the receive PINs to conduct during transmit, therby exposing the front-end to transnit power. High speed SWR circuits together with an incandescent lamp on the Rx input can help but it's no substitute for high reverse bias V on the Rx diodes.

Bottom line: it's not as easy as replacing a relay with a handful of PIN diodes and chokes.

Abhi, I have been trying to but a 7000 MK2 with the free shipping offer but the shipping charge still appears in the cart . I've emailed support but no reply so far.

I am considering upgrading to a 7000DLE from a early 100 (Hermes) model. I notice big differences 'under the hood' providing better latencies for CW operations to mention one significant difference. Two ADC convertors etc. Comparing specs I still confused... how much better can I receive or hear?

Please feel free to help me better understand the differences.

Hi Ken,

I own both. Due to crosstalk issues on the old 100 PA board, predistortion will not work as well as it should.
My recommendation: sell the 100 and buy a new 7000 DLE (II).

Thanks for you advice.

There is very little actual difference in the schematics with respect to the receiver hardware. It is almost identical. However, differences in board layouts, clock routing, etc. have helped lower internal noise in the newer designs. Anecdotally/subjectively (because I have NOT measured it, I'd say my 8000 is about 3dB better in terms of noise floor than my 100D. It's not a huge difference. I'd guess that the 7000 vs. the 100 would be about the same.

The real advantages are having the second ADC (if that's something you need) and solid PureSignal performance. The cooling will be better, too (again if that's something you need).

Thank you for the input... that sounds good. Still a tough decision, but I may go for an early Christmas present.

One thing I forgot: the ability to run Protocol 2 firmware is maximized with the Orion MKII platforms (7000 and 8000). It seems most stable on that board, and not very stable on the Hermes (which may require modification to increase available power to the FPGA).

I am running Protocol 2 on my ANAN-100 (Hermes) rig and I have to say it's very acceptable.

There are a fair number of little bugs, many not related to P2. One annoying thing lately is that some settings do not seem to stick after saving. For instance, transmit monitor level - no matter how many times I set it lower (5 typically), it resets back to 50 (default). Another bug is the radio's unwillingness to power on the first time or two... although this does not happen every time. Audio burps & chirps when running FT-8. That said, FT-8 does not seem to care.

Generally, I very pleased and have found many nice improvements with P2 and Thetis.

I am assuming you save this new level by saving the TX profile?

I previously hit apply and save options at the bottom of the transmit page, but following your comment I looked at the page again and noticed two unchecked boxes “Auto Save TX Profile on Thetis close” and “Auto Save TX Profile on change”. I checked the latter option and that fixes my ‘bug’.

I was never good a reading and following directions... it’s takes a slap or two.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Let's not solve Thetis problems in this topic. Start a new one in the Thetis sub-forum if you need to.

Can someone provide the 'overall dimensions' of the 7000DLE or unit with the same case? Including extrusions, feet, etc.

Thanks for all the help... did not intend to highjack thread. Very interested in upgrading to the 7000DLE MKII Black model.

When are these units expected ship to the States?

If it is like last year they will ship close to Christmas. I ordered mine last November I believe. They shipped it on a Monday and by Wednesday Evening it was in my shack. It was very good delivery.
