New user 7000 connection issue

Just received a 7000dle Mkll Black Edition radio today. I am getting the error message "Error starting SDR hardware, is it connected and powered?" After searching this forum and trying to resolve the problem, I decided to load PowerSDR and see what happens. Well, to my surprise PowerSDR runs perfectly. So what is different about Thetis that is won't run under the same conditions? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Did you also load the new version 2 firmware required for Thetis?

Doug,

You don't need to follow the link Tony provided, all is working as it should.

Currently there are two different versions of firmware for ANAN hardware. They are known as Protocol 1 and Protocol 2.

Protocol 1 is what currently ships from the factory. It will work with PowerSDR mRX PS, piHPSDR, and linHPSDR. Personally I recommend PowerSDR because it remains the most feature-rich choice if not the prettiest.

Protocol 2 is currently in beta. It works with Thetis (a derivative of PowerSDR mRX PS), piHPSDR, linHPSDR, and SDR Console. Again, I recommend Thetis because it remains the most feature-rich choice if not the prettiest.

I would encourage you to read the "sticky" posts in the following two sub-forums here in order become more knowledgeable about the Protocol 2 firmware available for your hardware and how to load it:

viewforum.php?f=32

The short answer is that P2 firmware doesn't reliably make timing on all serial numbers. You will need to find a version that works best on your serial number. I strongly recommend you use the Bootloader method for loading it (or going back to Protocol 1).

With that scary sounding statement out of the way, I say go for it! Almost everyone with a 7000 finds a version of P2 that works just fine, and the extra capabilities of P2 (larger IF sample rates, no restrictions on sample rate selection vs. PureSignal) are worth the effort.

Don't forget you MUST have a GigE connection between the PC and the hardware for P2 to work. It only runs at GigE speed. And you can't use Bootloader through a managed (smart) Ethernet switch, it must be a dumb switch.

Scott

Thanks to all for providing information. Pretty much all new to me, but since yesterday I am making progress. I think that will go ahead and load P2 after more research. Question is - what if I screw up along the way? Can I always return to the original FW? Last thing I want is a dumb black box. At least I have PowerSDR now.

You can always go back. Learn to use Bootloader mode. Don't use the other methods. It's only scary the first time ;)

Well, I would go ahead with P2, but the Bootloader app will not open on my Windows 10 HP laptop. I have tried multiple time to install and reinstall the program. It did try to open initially with a message that a DLL was missing. Now no message. Help.

Missing wpcap.dll so HpSDRBootLoader will not run. I do not know how to fix. Anyone have this problem?

Doug,

It is probably better to use Npcap as WinPCap has hacking vulnerabilities and wasn't designed for Win 10. Npcap is the newer program to use and can be found here: https://nmap.org/npcap/. Download the link titled Npcap 1.00 installer.

Npcap seems to work as WinPCap, as best I can see. I haven't flashed the firmware with it as I haven't had any new firmware to flash but it does load and will discover my 7000 MkII Black just fine so I "assume" it flashes properly.
