ADC2 Overload intermittent yellow message

Postby ag4us » Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:35 pm

Happy belated New Year to the group.

I'm a new ANAN user, love this radio!.
Running a 200D, Thetis P2, latest firmware and latest Thetis upgrade. (Thetis v2.811 x64 Protocol 2 v1.9.15. MW0LGE 21k8.
Yesterday I ran an antenna to be used with the Diversity option on RX2. Works good.
Ever since, I see this ADC2 Overload intermittent yellow message. RX2 activated or not.
If I disconnect or ground the antenna (long wire running along a plastic fence) the message disappears.
This issue did not happen yesterday, towards the end of the day when I installed the antenna.
It started happening today, midday.
As the evening is approaching here in S.Florida, the problem seems to have gone away. (5:30 PM local time, sun going down).Propagation change?
Has anyone experienced this issue?
Thank you
73 de AG4US, Gus.

I have the same recent problem here after adding an end-fed antenna a few days ago. It is not clear to me what else may have been coincident.

Just use the RX2 input attenuator.
You have to enable RX2 on console temporarly to get access.
The value is stored on per band basis.

Do you see the overload messages only when transmitting, or all the time?

Response to DL2XY: Thanks for your suggestion Walter.
I was not able to find RX2 input attenuator settings. Running a 200D model here, Thetis P2.
You are on the right track, see my next post below.

Response to WU2O Scott: Up until now, I did not get a chance to TX.
So I hit the MOX button to lock the radio on TX, sat there and watched the computer monitor for three minutes. Did NOT do it.
In RX it does it 2-3 times in one minute, varies.

It's a rainy and windy afternoon here in S.Florida.
I figured that the wet wires would attenuate the signals and make the issue go away, not the case.

Walter, DL2XY is on the right track. The problem is signal strength related.

I live a few miles away from a MW broadcasting station. This station interferes with other of my radios with a weak front end.
If I engage their antenna tuner or a tuned circuit in line in case of a receiver only device, the interference disappears.
This only happens during the day. At night, they change the radiation pattern an all is good. I already spoke with the station engineer.

I just attached a manual antenna tuner to RX2 antenna input and adjusted it to maximum noise. Problem went away.

My conclusion, RX2 circuit is not as bulletproof as the main antenna input of the radio, which it is REALLY bulletproof.
Opinions?
Thank you
Gus.

You have a 200D. There is no preselector (bandpass filter array) on the RX2/ADC1 (second ADC) input, only on the ANT1/2/3/ADC0 (first ADC) input.

You can review the 200D schematics here: viewforum.php?f=35

I made an external preselector for my 100D. You can read about that here:

http://wu2o.dyndns.org/wu2o_anan_helper.html

That preselector, and the internal one, are not terribly selective, being only 3rd order filters, but it would appear to be enough to deal with your situation.

Another, simpler option, would be to buy and install an AM broadcast band high pass filter. There are lots of them available from the usual sources like DX Engineering, etc. You can even buy them on Amazon.

P.S. wet wires make almost no difference at HF freq's.

Thank you Scott for your detailed response!
Congrats on the preselector, looks very professional.
I will build another BP filter like the one I'm using on a few receivers. It does a great job, it's ver simple and inexpensive.

"P.S. wet wires make almost no difference at HF freq's." The vinyl fence where the long wire is strung might be?

73 all, great forum, very glad I made the move to ANAN!
