How to connect 100D and OM2500A

Postby Tony pa3gwo » Thu Apr 21, 2022 3:16 pm

Hello,

I have been trying to connect my recently aquired 100D with my OM2500A but cannot get it too work automatically.
There is a serial to usb lead with FDTI chipsetting connected from the serial (PC) port on the 2500A and than into a usb socket on the pc.
In CAT+ I enabled port 4 with a baudrate off 9600 and the lead mentioned above has port 4 in the pc.
The OM2500A has been set to Kenwood/Flex with a baudrate off 9600 but does not connect.

So any suggestions are welcome because I am running out off ideas.

Kindest regards Tony pa3gwo

The list of things that might be wrong is pretty long.

The OM2500A manual does not show a "Kenwood/Flex" setting, only Kenwood. If there is a Kenwood only setting try that.

The OM2500A manual is very vague about the characteristics of the interface.

Try turning on "Allow Kenwood AI Command" in CAT setup (are you using PowerSDR or Thetis? What version?)

Did you load the driver properly for the USB to serial cable? Do you have any way to test it, say with a terminal program and a null modem cable and another computer?

Hello,

Tnx for responding.
I have included a picture where it shows the setting I made and there is no seperate Kenwood setting .
I am using thetis 2.8.11.
The cable worked well on another setup when I had the amp. connected with a Orion 2 and I have no other possibility to test it.
According to the device manager it works fine and is being recognised.
I am surtenly suffering from a lack off knowledge regarding pc but it is a learning curve.

Not sure what you mean by "HRD works fine".

Download and install a terminal emulator application. Set that app up to talk to the amp. See if the amp is sending polling commands to the PC. If it is, post what it is sending, please.

I did mean to say that Hamradiodeluxe works okay and maybe that I had to make some changes in it as well, but that is just a guess.
Because I have no idea how to get the terminal emulator working I wil contact a friend and will inform you when I have some more info.

Tony, how did it work out? I am wanting to get an OM-2501A to run with my ANAN 7000 DLE MKII.
RADIO: ANAN 7000 DLE MK2 (Black Version) Thetis 2.8.11.
PC: HP Desktop - Intel Core i7 (10th Gen) - 16GB memory - 512GB SSD - Intel UHD Graphics 630 - WINDOWS 10 (100% Dedicated to ANAN)
PS: ASTRON 35 AMP (100% Dedicated to ANAN)

Hello,

I have decided to sell the 100D because I am having to many problems trying to get it setup.
It is a great piece off engineering but to complicated for me .
And I have not been able to solve the problem with the OM either.

OM-POWER *TRANSCEIVER* port to SERIAL PORT COM 1 on PC , serial cable, 2-3, 3-2, 5-5
set K3 19K2 in OM Cat Menu

Try that

That's great info, Dennis. It shows that a null modem connection is required (the pins 2 to 3 and 3 to 2 swap), and that information will undoubtedly be helpful to future OM amp users. It's beyond disappointing that OM did not put the amplifier serial port pinout in its manual. But trying a null modem configuration is always an obvious move.

Did you have to turn on "Allow Kenwood AI Command" in Thetis?

It would have been an easy fix for Tony if he had been willing to put in the in the time. I was already going down that path in my initial response above.

set K3

OM calls this setting "ELEC.K3 KENWOOD" as pictured below. Much like Thetis, the K3 supports Kenwood commands as part of the CAT interface. It's very likely that the OM is using the Kenwood FA, FB and FT commands to determine TX frequency.

19K2 in OM Cat Menu

Baud rate shouldn't matter as long as they are matched on both sides. What did you use for parity, data and stop bit settings in Thetis?

the below may look stupid and confusing, any ANAN owners trying to have it all follow may find it useful,

Hello Scott, well this issue has been a sore point for some time now, when inquiring with the manufacture, and a OM retailer, the result was confusing,

OM say 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 for CAT FROM * Physical * PC COM 1, TO OM *Transceiver port* , **NOT PC PORT.** using DU3500AL / DU4000AL full ATUO Tuners it is same serial BUT, OM * PC port * to DU3500AL *TRANSCEIVER port.* To have Peters Tuners follow ANAN / OM

just recently a friend of mine with a Yaesu radio and OM, had to use 2-2, 3-3, 5-5, for communications,

PLUS, add a cable from OM AMP, (PC) To DU3500AL (Transceiver Port) with ANAN rigs, the PC is the Radio and PC as one, and is confusing,
I have not had need to activate (Allow KW AI Cmd,) (kw & elecraft) shake hands well,

Yaesu BCD to OM-A amps is 2-2, 3-3, 5-5, with KW / K3 hand shake in the OM amps, BUT also have to link BACK to a PC,

ANAN 7K is CAT control in Thetis (TS2000) COM 1, 19K2, NONE, 8, 1, 3-2, 2-3, 5-5 Serial to OM power Transceiver, KW/K3 19K2 ,

A lot of hours by a lot of hams to get this to work, especially when the designers are NOT up to speed with different exciters.
a company product that makes use of FTDI chipset in a Serial port adapter works very well, KEEP AWAY from CH-340 chips, NO GOOD drop out work one minute, LOST COMMS the next,

STARTECH,COM have a special on Amazon for the 4 port Serial to USB with FTDI chipset adaptor, works 100% all of the time
I use DELL Optiplex SFF, pc's and order a Physical Com port.

it looks a mess, I hope it assists at least one ANAN owner,

Cheers
Dennis vk4sx,

ps
NO CH-340 Usb chipsets, FTDI only.

Whoa, that's way too much info, Dennis.

All people need to know is:

1. Use the OM-2500 "TCVR" port.
2. OM-2500 TCVR Pin 2 is serial data input.
3. OM-2500 TCVR Pin 3 is serial data output.
4. OM-2500 TCVR Pin 5 is ground.

Since a standard PC 9-pin serial port is wired exactly the same way, it is necessary to build or construct a cable that connects OM-2500 pin 2 to PC pin 3 and vice versa.

Luckily these cables can be purchased. They are called "null modem" cables. Or a normal serial cable that is pinned straight through can have a "null modem adapter" added to it.
