Re: 'CW handled in Radio' mode, but not from rigctl
Just to document the situation. Some imperfections in CW behavior have been corrected in pihpsdr. The issues I encountered have been cured.

'CW handled in Radio' mode, but not from rigctl
rig: G2 100W, w.o. ctrl front, embedded pihpsdr, V10 gateware. To have sufficient directness in CW it is necessary to use the 'CW handled in Radio' mode 'CWHIR'. The keying and cw signal generation are done in hardware, i.s.o. in wdsp. My key is connected to the key input at the G2 rear panel. I wan...

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
update after trying kernel 6.1 production image: The mic input works correctly. But the audio chopping at random moments is clearly present at sample speeds where the 6.5.5 stays smooth. Also noticed that in the 6.1 image hpsdr and p2app can coexist without causing the tx-rx runaway. Have now also t...

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
@n1gp Tnx for hints. no luck with setting mic in. Just total silence during tx. E.g. two-tone tx works fine. Also removed .props, to no avail. Just a thought: Could it be that my experimental OS being 64 bit (arm64) causes some settings to be wrong because intended in the pihpsdr code for 32 bit? Fi...

@Trucker: See
https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/cm4i ... asheet.pdf
That is a motherboard for experimenting with a CM4. Its just two miniature connectors, very similar to the system used by eMMC memory modules. Just more pins.

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
regarding no mic input when running embedded pihpsdr: The settings are exactly the same as for the external pihpsdr that I can run on my PC perfectly. Audio on tip, bias active, local audio unchecked as there is none coming from pulseaudio. My guess is that the Saturn codec does not get initialized ...

Re: Severe problem with PureSignal
as the difference between 20 m and the other bands is rather extreme, have you considered checking the filters that are in the transmit path? As a dummy load is used that would not discriminate between bands, nor does the firmware. But a faulty filter could, or a filter switch not happening and the ...

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
@laurence: tnx for background info! Using the Armbian environment made an image on basis of arm64 architecture and kernel 6.5, but with just enough in the OS to let pihpsdr show its GUI. So basically just cli plus X11 and Openbox Have patched 'your' xdma driver into it and for now called it xdma2 as...

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
@Laurence; encountered the xdma code in kernel 6.5. The xdma.c code starts with this intro: /* * The DMA/Bridge Subsystem for PCI Express allows for the movement of data * between Host memory and the DMA subsystem. It does this by operating on * 'descriptors' that contain information about the sourc...

Re: G2 Software and Firmware Updates 27 Aug 2023
@Laurence Barker G8NJJ quick question: current Linux kernels have a Xilinx 'xdma' driver that one can choose. Yet the source code of the xdma module on github/Saturn is quite different. Would the current xdma module also interface to the Saturn FPGA, or are the two distinctly different, just sharing...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
NR0V, Warren, the author off wdsp was so kind to give some hints on how to test whether wdsp is short of CPU cycles. With a setting with lots of audio hick-ups, the tests were negative. If it were wdsp causing problems, adding certain CPU intensive functions like noise cancellation would add to the ...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
as the forum thread is getting long, some info may get forgotten. The problem is not limited to G2s with display. Mine, w.o. display, I'd also like to use stand-alone with the embedded pihpsdr doing the work. But same problem with audio. Using the exact same pihpsdr, but compiled for my Linux PC and...

Re: Network based (remote) radio power on/off
some results: with the above mentioned 2-relay board one can indeed reliably switch the G2 on. But when giving the 1/2 second shorting of the power button to turn off, this turns out to be to long. The power is switched off immediately. The 'short' button press needs to be quite short. For now I'll ...

on the topic of 'which thread' it would perhaps be an idea to separate issues that are specific to the G2 having a controller, and issues that all G2s have in common.

Had same question and came to same conclusion on basis of circuit diagram: no go. Once off but with supply voltage present one cannot switch the G2 on, other than by the button. Re: G2 audio architecture
tnx. In my case need to access the rx and tx audio and send that as a stream over the internet. Thought of a work around that may help others: Pulseaudio, part of the Rpi OS, has the option of defining virtual audio sinks. From embedded pihpsdr that sink can be chosen as local audio. Pulseaudio auto...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
Does Apache Labs have a site from where one can download a new SD card image? Or a patch file to apply to the current card image. Some more measurements. 2 RX @768k gives much breaking up of the audio. mpstat shows for the 4 CPUs: 09:04:15 AM CPU %usr %nice %sys %iowait %irq %soft %steal %guest %gni...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
@n1gp tnx. It seems we have a different perception of how VNC works. I think in essence the vncserver, started under systemctl as vncserver-x11-serviced.service, only allows a remote VNC client to produce a copy of the local screen on a remote screen, and feed the remote mouse/keyboard back to the l...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
@n1gp tnx for feedback. I don't understand your 'do it from a VNC connection'. All my reports are about pihpsdr running in CM4' Linux OS. How I start pihpsdr makes no difference; have done so via ssh as a console command, or using VNC to select the application menu item 'pihpsdr' from a window on an...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
@w-u-2-o actually experimented with CPU loading but did not notice a real influence. What I did is breaking the VNC link to the active desktop where pihpsdr shows its GUI. That removes some 40% CPU load, according to what 'top' shows, but does not reduce the chopping. @n1gp just tried with p2app act...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
To give an idea of the chopping effect I observe, using the embedded pihpsdr as receiver and with p2app not running. Attached 6 mp3 recordings of the G2 headphone output, digitized on a separate Linux PC using line-in and Audacity. Created a carrier, using my Icom ic-7100, and the G2 is tuned in USB...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
G2/100W/no-display added a virtual sink to pulseaudio and chose that as 'local audio' output in the RX menu. Pulseaudio than automatically also creates a monitor source. Have made ffmpeg use that monitor source as input and create a stream that I can listen to on my PC. The headphone output remains ...

G2 audio architecture
for historical reasons the audio codec on the Saturn board is interfaced to the FPGA and is not 'seen' by the Linux OS running on the CM4. Can this be changed by a change to the FPGA programming? Could a switch be introduced in the FPGA that, in the case of using p2app and an external sdr applicatio...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
to prevent misunderstanding. The chopping is also there with only the embedded pihpsdr active. The other problem I had was an issue in tx mode with relay 'K5' clicking. That turned out to be p2app interfering with embedded pihpsdr. Had not started p2app manually but it was running because auto-start...

Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
@laurencebarker tnx for the clarifications. First a correction on my behalf, related to the relay clicks that I reported earlier. Re: rec audio clicking/chopping on peaks
@wu2o Thank you; starting to get it. Looked at the block diagrams and although they are not very consistent, it appears to be the case that the audio codec interfaces to the FPGA. One block diagram (G2 Manual, architecture 1.2) shows both Raspberry and codec circuitry being interfaced to PCIe. In an...
